Southwest Elementary Battle of the Books Team Meeting
Friday, October 18, 2013
Meeting Guidelines:
1. Eat lunch while we are meeting.
2. BE NEAT and clean up after yourself.
3. LISTEN and participate.
Agenda
1. Meeting dates- Day 3: 10/28, 11/6, 11/15, 11/25, 12/6, 12/16
2. Meeting times- 4th grade 10:40-11:20; 5th grade 12:00-12:40
3. Concentrate on the following in each book you read:
Plot
Setting (not specific names of places)
Character traits
Genre
How the book begins and how it ends
Conflicts within the story (what are they, who are they between?)
4. Write 10 questions for each book you read. (EBOB question template handout)
*All questions will begin: “In which book…?”
*We will avoid using proper names for characters and settings
*We will sometimes use quotes taken directly from the book
*We will avoid any specific reference to the title within the question
**Answers will always be in the format of the title (must be exact) and the authors’ names (must be exact)
5. Extra copies of books (need)
6. Coaches (need)
7. Reading Progress...
8. Practice Competitions- We will practice answering questions in the same way the competition will work. There will be a judge, moderator, scorekeepers, and timekeepers. 6 members will play at a time. An adult will ask a question and the team will get to talk to each other quickly to decide on an answer. Each member of the playing team will take turns giving the "official" answer for the team. All questions start with the phrase "In which book...." All answers are the title and author of the book. It's that simple! The team gets 2 points for the correct title and 1 point for the correct author; for a total of 3 points per question asked. If a team cannot answer, the other team gets a chance to answer for 2 points. After 12 questions are asked the round is over, and the team with the most points wins.
Here's an example:
Question: In which book is a barber made a king?
